U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence and members of the Coronavirus Task Force spoke to the media and the American people regarding the country’s COVID-19 response on Tuesday following Pence’s remarks to the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service.
Pence said that the number of new COVID-19 deaths in the country is at the lowest level since the end of March, but said they are working closely with states seeing upticks in new cases, with a focus on Florida, Arizona, Texas and California, which are seeing some of the highest numbers.
When asked about whether there could be a federal decision to make masks and facial coverings mandatory in the U.S. as part of the COVID-19 response, Pence said that the administration supports the guidance given by each state’s authorities to local communities in regards to facial coverings. However, he said they are focused on assisting states that are seeing surges in new cases, and did not say if there’s consideration for a nationwide mask policy.
To date, more than 10 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported globally. About a quarter of them have been reported in the U.S.
