U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence and members of the Coronavirus Task Force addressed the country’s COVID-19 response on Wednesday at the Department of Education, and spoke on the Trump administration’s push to have schools fully reopen amid the pandemic this fall.

During the briefing, Pence explained, in his view, why schools in the country should reopen for in-person learning amid the coronavirus pandemic. He said “it’s the right thing to do” for children so that they don’t fall behind academically, and that children in need of mental health services or who have “special needs” get those services required.

Additionally, the vice president said that the government is seeing “early indications” of hot spot states Arizona, Florida and Texas flattening their COVID-19 curves, after recent spikes of confirmed positive cases.

This briefing comes as President Donald Trump on Tuesday launched an all-out effort pressing state and local officials to reopen schools this fall, arguing that some are keeping schools closed not because of the risks from the coronavirus pandemic but for political reasons.

To date, more than 10 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported globally. About a quarter of them have been reported in the U.S.
